Day 12 recap
[MON 25 JUN 2018 – 20:23:42 UTC]

Two groups were decided at the 2018 Men’s World Cup on MON 25 JUN 2018, including simultaneous video reviews in stoppage time of two matches.

  • Saudi Arabia 02-01 Egypt: Both teams were on their way out of the tournament, but they were eager to leave a positive impression. Mohamed SALAH put Egypt ahead midway through the first half. But at the other end, the Saudis were awarded two penalties late in the first half. The first was saved by Essam EL-HADARY, who, at 45, became the oldest player in a Men’s World Cup match when he was given the start. The second, however, was converted by Salman AL-FARAJ. Salem AL-DAWSARI then added the winner with virtually the last kick of the match, and the Green Falcons exit the tournament with a victory.
  • Uruguay 03-00 Russia: The hosts needed only a draw to take top spot in Group A, but they were pipped to the post. Luis SUÁREZ opened the scoring on a free kick ten minutes in. Then, in the 23rd, a shot by Diego LAXALT was deflected in off Denis CHERYSHEV for the sixth own goal of the tournament, matching the record set in 1998. Late in the first half, Igor SMOLNIKOV was sent off for a second yellow. Edinson CAVANI would add a third for the Charrúas late on.
  • Iran 01-01 Portugal: As the first half wound down, Portugal took the lead through a Ricardo QUARESMA strike from the edge of the area. They had the opportunity to make it two shortly after the restart, but CRISTIANO RONALDO sent his spot kick directly into the arms of Iran keeper Ali BEIRANVAND. Later in the half, Ronaldo escaped with only a yellow card after an elbow to the face of Morteza POURALIGANJI. In stoppage time, a video review – the fourth of the match – led to an Iran penalty for a handball, which Karim ANSARIFARD converted.
  • Spain 02-02 Morocco: The Atlas Lions twice took the lead, but Spain twice equalised. In the first half, it was ISCO’s goal that cancelled Khalid BOUTAÏB’s opener. Then, Youssef EN-NESYRI headed in the apparent winner in the 81st minute, but in stoppage time, Iago ASPAS’s equaliser was ruled onside following a video review. With both Group B matches ending in draws, Spain take first place on goals scored.
  • Round of 16 matchups: Uruguay-Portugal, Spain-Russia
