El Salvador players allege match fixing attempt
[THU 08 SEP 2016 – 06:49:57 UTC]
A day before their last 2018 Men’s World Cup qualifier, El Salvador players announced that they had been offered bribes, which they refused, to get a result against Canada and ensure Honduras’s progress out of the CONCACAF semifinal round. FIFA and CONCACAF have confirmed that they are investigating the matter.
Three years after 14 El Salvador players were found guilty of match fixing and handed lifetime bans, the current squad held a press conference, playing recordings of a man offering players up to US$3,000 each for a win or draw, which would have eliminated Canada and seen Honduras through to the final round.
Canada won the match 3-1 but were eliminated regardless, as Honduras earned a goalless draw with Mexico.
