New Zealand, New Caledonia, Tahiti claim spots in OFC final round
[THU 02 JUN 2016 – 09:16:55 UTC]

After two matchdays at the 2016 OFC Men’s Nations Cup, three of the six places in the final round of Men’s World Cup qualifiers have been won. New Zealand are through after two wins in Group B, and Group A joint leaders New Caledonia and Tahiti also move on.

The All Whites have made short work of their Group B opponents, scoring eight goals and conceding only one. The Solomon Is and Fiji are tied for second place. Vanuatu are still in the running but would likely need a three goal win over Fiji to advance to the OFC final round.

In Group A, host Papua New Guinea have drawn with both New Caledonia and Tahiti. They led Tahiti 2-0 with 25 minutes to play, and with a man advantage, but the French Polynesian squad drew level on a header by Alvin TEHAU and an equaliser by his cousin Teaonui TEHAU. For PNG, a third draw, against minnows Samoa, would see them into the final round.

The last placed team in each group will be eliminated from the Men’s World Cup qualifiers. The remaining teams will take part in the final round beginning in MAR 2017, and the top two will also reach the Men’s Nations Cup semifinals.
