The CONMEBOL group phase was drawn in St Petersburg, Russia, on SAT 25 JUL 2015.

The ten CONMEBOL member nations all play in one group, so the draw merely decided the order of matches. The first date of matches, on MON 05-FRI 09 OCT 2015, sees Argentina-Ecuador, Bolivia-Uruguay, Chile-Brazil, Colombia-Peru, and Venezuela-Paraguay. The corresponding return fixures are to be played on the last date, SAT 07-WED 11 OCT 2017.

Once all ten teams have played one another twice, the top four teams qualify for Russia 2018, and the fifth placed team participates in the OFC/​CONMEBOL playoff.
