US keep another clean sheet in semifinal win over Germany
[WED 01 JUL 2015 – 02:51:43 UTC]
The United States defeated Germany 2-0 in the Women’s World Cup semifinals on TUE 30 JUN 2015, becoming the first team to book their place in the final. The US kept a clean sheet for the fifth consecutive match.
The first half in Montréal ended goalless but saw the US with more attacking opportunities. Germany, though, nearly took the lead on a 60th minute penalty. Julie JOHNSTON pulled down Alexandra POPP in the area, but Célia ŠAŠIĆ’s penalty was wide of the post.
Nine minutes later, a foul by Annike KRAHN on Alex MORGAN was ruled inside the area by referee Teodora ALBON, despite replays indicating that it occurred just outside. Carli LLOYD then scored from the spot, her second such goal in the elimination phase.
All doubt was removed in the 84th minute, when Kelley O’HARA added a second to the delight of the American supporters who flocked across the border into Montréal. Germany travel to Edmonton for the third place match on Saturday, whilst the US return to Vancouver for Sunday’s final against the Japan-England winner.
