I’M JEFF AGOOS, AND GOOBNET MAKES ME WANT TO SCORE AN OWN GOAL

Day 17 recap
[TUE 23 JUN 2015 – 02:05:10 UTC]

Wars of attrition were fought as the round of 16 continued at the Women’s World Cup on MON 22 JUN 2015.

  • Norway 01-02 England: The Norwegians controlled much of the first half in Ottawa but could not make their advantage pay off. Early in the second half, the sides traded goals headed in from corners: Solveig GULBRANDSEN for Norway and Steph HOUGHTON for England. Then, in the 76th minute, Lucy BRONZE launched a missile from distance that Norwegian keeper Ingrid HJELMSETH could not keep out. England held on for their first ever win in the elimination phase of a Women’s World Cup; they meet host Canada in Vancouver on Saturday.
  • United States 02-00 Colombia: Catalina PÉREZ turned in an inspired performance in goal for Colombia, but at the start of the second half, her foul on Alex MORGAN drew a red card from referee Stéphanie FRAPPART. Though Abby WAMBACH missed the resulting penalty, the numeric advantage paid off as Morgan found net four minutes later. Carli LLOYD added a penalty in the 66th minute to seal the victory in Edmonton. The US now travel to Ottawa for Friday’s quarterfinal against China PR.
