Last gasp Quinteros earns qualification for Ecuador
[WED 03 DEC 2014 – 06:50:52 UTC]
Ecuador have claimed the 24th and final place at the 2015 Women’s World Cup with a 1-0 aggregate win over Trinidad-Tobago in the CONCACAF/CONMEBOL playoff. Mónica QUINTEROS scored the lone goal in stoppage time in the second leg.
The first leg in Quito ended in a goalless draw, leaving both sides optimistic of a first qualification. Because they hosted the Women’s Copa América, the second leg in Port of Spain was Ecuador’s first qualifier away from home.
It was T-T, though, who took the initiative in the second leg and nearly had the winner when an overhead kick by Kennya CORDNER struck the bar. But with the match just minutes away from extra time, Angie PONCE sent a free kick into the area, and Quinteros headed the historic goal past keeper Kimika FORBES.
La Tri will now wait for the draw, to be held in Ottawa, ON on SAT 06 DEC 2014, to discover whom they face in the first Women’s World Cup match in their history.
