Extra time winner qualifies Cameroon; Nigeria joins in
[THU 23 OCT 2014 – 03:25:22 UTC]
A 118th minute header by Christine MANIE earned Cameroon a first trip to the Women’s World Cup as they defeated Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in overtime in the CAF Women’s Championship semifinals. Nigeria also qualified with a 2-1 win over South Africa, but the South Africans and Ivoirians will have a second chance to qualify in the third place match.
The Cameroon-Côte d’Ivoire semifinal was level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, with a second half goal by Cameroon’s Gaelle ENGANAMOUIT neutralised just six minutes later by Ines TIA. Lionnes captain Manie, who had cleared away a potential winner at the end of normal time, headed in from a corner with two minutes remaining in extra time.
In the earlier semifinal, Nigeria earned their seventh qualification in as many attempts. Asisat OSHOALA scored both goals for the Super Falcons in the first half. Jane REFILOE pulled one back for South Africa in the 67th minute, but after that, the Nigerian defense bunkered in and turned away the frequent attacks.
Nigeria and Cameroon will now face off for the African women’s title, with Cameroon seeking their first title; Nigeria have won eight previously. The winner of the third place match, between South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire, will also qualify for Canada 2015.
