Day 20 recap
[TUE 03 JUL 2018 – 21:40:55 UTC]

The round of 16 of the 2018 Men’s World Cup concluded on TUE 03 JUL 2018 with late theatrics, and a first for one participating team.

  • Sweden 01-00 Switzerland: Both sides came out with strong attacks in the first half, although the most damage either team could do was a shot by Switzerland’s Blerim DŽEMAILI that skimmed over the crossbar and took out a boom microphone behind the goal. But midway through the second half, the Blågult were in front, as Emil FORSBERG received a square ball from Ola TOIVONEN and fired home following a deflection off Manuel AKANJI. The Swiss had their opportunities to equalise, including a header by Breel EMBOLO that was cleared away by Forsberg. But in stoppage time, Michael LANG was sent off for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity to Martin OLSSON, who was through on goal for a potential second. Sweden win their first elimination match at a Men’s World Cup since their 1994 run to third place.
  • Colombia 01-01 England [F/OT; pen: 03-04]: An ill tempered match erupted into controversy in the 38th minute, when Colombia’s Wilmar BARRIOS escaped with only a yellow card after driving his head into the chest and chin of Jordan HENDERSON. England took the lead in the 57th minute when Harry KANE, having just been brought down in the area by Carlos SÁNCHEZ, converted the penalty. The Cafeteros equalised deep into stoppage time on a Yerry MINA header from a corner, forcing extra time and then penalties. England, having failed in their three previous Men’s World Cup penalty shootouts, rewrote the script as Jordan PICKFORD saved Carlos BACCA’s attempt, and then Eric DIER placed his past David OSPINA. England advance to a quarterfinal encounter with Sweden.
