• Poland 04-02 Montenegro: Poland were 2-0 up after sixteen minutes and looked to have Group E well in hand. But a 78th minute goal by Stefan MUGOŠA was promptly followed by Žarko TOMAŠEVIĆ’s equaliser. As he has throughout the campaign, though, Robert LEWANDOWSKI came through when needed, removing all doubt with his record setting sixteenth goal of the qualifiers. The Biało-czerwoni reach the Men’s World Cup for the first time since 2006.
• Slovenia 02-02 Scotland: 32 minutes in, Leigh GRIFFITHS scored a crucial goal, the first that Slovenia had conceded at home in Group F. The win would have put Scotland into the playoffs, but a brace by Roman BEZJAK turned things around, and although Robert SNODGRASS found an equaliser two minutes from time, the Scots could not find the winner they needed. The draw eliminates both teams, as Slovakia defeated Malta to pip both of them to second place.
• Serbia 01-00 Georgia: Aleksandar PRIJOVIĆ entered just after the hour mark, and thirteen minutes later, he finished a cross from Aleksandar MITROVIĆ, which turned out to be all that Serbia needed. The Eagles finish top of Group D and return to the Men’s World Cup for the twelfth time.
• Croatia 02-00 Ukraine: Croatia reach the playoffs after Andrej KRAMARIĆ scored twice in an eight minute span in the second half...
• Iceland 02-00 Kosovo: ...but Group I would belong to Iceland. A goal and an assist from Gylfi SIGURĐSSON were enough to earn a fifth home win in five matches and send the island of 330,000 through to Russia, the first nation with a population under one million to compete at a Men’s World Cup.
• Netherlands 02-00 Sweden: With France defeating Belarus to take first place in Group A, the Dutch needed to win by seven goals to advance to the playoffs. Arjen ROBBEN did his part with two goals in the first half, but it was simply too steep a climb for the Oranje.
• Portugal 02-00 Switzerland: An own goal and a strike by André SILVA shattered Switzerland’s perfect record in Group B and put Portugal top on goal difference.
• Greece 04-00 Gibraltar: Playing for second place in Group H behind already qualified Belgium, Greece powered into the playoffs on a brace by Kostas MITROGLOU. The result eliminated Slovakia, the lowest of the group runners up.
