Messi’s Argentina suspension overturned on appeal
[FRI 05 MAY 2017 – 17:12:27 UTC]
FIFA have overturned Argentina forward Lionel MESSI’s four match suspension after a successful appeal. Messi may now return to action, having missed one match.
Messi was originally punished for an altercation with an assistant referee late in Argentina’s CONMEBOL group phase match at home to Chile on THU 23 MAR 2017. FIFA’s disciplinary committee had taken action because the match referee, Sandro RICCI, did not observe the incident.
The appeals committee, however, decided that the evidence was insufficient and reinstated Messi, as well as overturning the fine of CHF10,000. Messi may now return for Argentina’s four remaining matches in the group phase.
