Bolivian appeal rejected; forfeitures to stand
[WED 08 FEB 2017 – 00:57:33 UTC]
FIFA have denied Bolivia’s appeal of the two forfeited matches in the CONMEBOL qualifiers for the 2018 Men’s World Cup. The matches will stand as 3-0 forfeit losses to Peru and Chile.
FIFA had earlier announced that the two matches – a 2-0 home win over Peru on THU 01 SEP 2016 and a goalless draw away to Chile on TUE 06 SEP 2016 – were to be awarded by forfeiture due to an ineligible player. Defender Nelson CABRERA had previously played for Paraguay in a friendly match but now holds Bolivian citizenship. He appeared for Bolivia as a substitute in both matches; however, the FIFA disciplinary committee decided that he had not completed the necessary steps to represent a new nation.
Taking the forfeitures into account, Bolivia currently sit ninth in CONMEBOL with seven points. La Verde have six matches left to play.
