Bolivia punished for ineligible player
[WED 02 NOV 2016 – 06:11:50 UTC]

FIFA have sanctioned Bolivia for fielding an ineligible player in their CONMEBOL qualifiers against Peru and Chile played in SEP 2016. Bolivia lose the four points they had accumulated in those matches.

Defender Nelson CABRERA entered both matches off the bench, a 2-0 home win over Peru on THU 01 SEP 2016 and a goalless draw away to Chile on TUE 06 SEP 2016. Cabrera had previously represented Paraguay, though FIFA have not confirmed whether Cabrera’s transfer of nationality was rejected, or whether such a request was even made.

As a result of the sanctions, Bolivia are left with four points, still in ninth place. Meanwhile, the two additional points for Chile bump them up to a tie with Argentina for fifth place.
