Nations Cup semifinalists to meet again in OFC final round
[SAT 09 JUL 2016 – 18:09:16 UTC]
The Oceania Football Confederation has held the draw for the final round of qualifiers for the 2018 Men’s World Cup. The results will see rematches of the semifinals of the Men’s Nations Cup, as New Zealand meet New Caledonia, and Papua New Guinea face Solomon Is.
In each group, the same two teams will play one another twice in the same international break, as the remaining team in the group is idle. Thus, Group A opens with two legs between the All Whites and the Cagous in NOV 2016. New Zealand then play Fiji, and the New Caledonia-Fiji matches wrap up the group. Likewise in Group B, Tahiti take on the Solomon Is twice, and then PNG twice. They are then idle in JUN 2017, when the Solomon Is and PNG square off.
When all six matches in each group have been played, the two group winners meet in the OFC playoff, with the victor advancing to play the fifth placed team from CONMEBOL. The winner of that playoff qualifies for Russia 2018.
