• Gabon 01-01 Mozambique [away goals 00-00; F/OT; pen: 04-03]: Mozambique’s first leg edge evaporated on Malick EVOUNA’s goal in the fourth minute in Libreville. With no further goals, the second leg went to extra time and then penalties. Pierre-Emerick AUBAMEYANG scored the winner for the Panthers.
• Equatorial Guinea 01-02 Morocco: RUI Da Gracia scored for Eq Guinea early in the second leg, but the Atlas Lions’ two goal victory at home was too much to overcome.
• Congo 06-04 Ethiopia: Ethiopia lost the first leg at home 4-3 but equalised on aggregate through Getaneh KEBEDE in the first half in Brazzaville. The hosts fought back, though, and Francis N’GANGA and Thievy BIFOUMA found net to earn a place in the group phase.
• Ghana 02-00 Comoros: The Coelacanths held Ghana goalless in the first leg, but home cooking did wonders for the Black Stars. Wakaso MUBARAK and Jordan AYEW scored the crucial goals.
• Nigeria 02-00 Swaziland: In similar fashion, the Super Eagles found their wings clipped in Lobamba but soared into the next round upon their return home, where Moses SIMON and Efe AMBROSE were the goalscorers.
• Egypt 04-01 Chad: Ezechiel N’DOUASEL gave the Sao a shock win in the first leg, but after returning to Egypt, the tide turned with two goals in the first ten minutes of the first half. Then Ahmed HASSAN MAHGOUB added two more in the last ten minutes of the first half.
• Burkina Faso 03-02 Benin: The Squirrels held a 2-1 advantage after the first leg but could not hold on. In Ouagadougou, a penalty by Jonathan PITROIPA put the Stallions ahead on away goals, and the outcome was sealed with Bertrand TRAORE’s goal in the second half.
• Algeria 09-02 Tanzania: Elias MAGULI and Mbwana SAMATTA gave Tanzania a 2-0 lead 55 minutes into the first leg, but the Fennecs soon recovered. Islam SLIMANI scored twice in a three minute span to end the first leg at 2-2. Algeria then took the aggregate lead in the first minute of the second leg, through Yacine BRAHIMI. Six more goals followed before the day was done.
• Senegal 05-02 Madagascar: The Barea were up two goals after the first of the three total hours played, but Senegal made sure of their place in the group phase with five goals of their own, including two by Mame Biram DIOUF after that point.
• Cabo Verde 02-01 Kenya: Michael OLUNGA gave Kenya the lead nine minutes into the series, but in Praia, Héldon RAMOS scored twice to send the Blue Sharks onward.
