Draw to decide Men’s World Cup groups
[FRI 06 DEC 2013 – 05:56:16 UTC]

The draw for the 2014 Men’s World Cup will commence at 16:00 UTC on FRI 06 DEC 2013, following a procedure set out by FIFA earlier in the week. Although each group will contain one seeded team and either one or two UEFA teams, little further can be known until the draw completes.

In the first draw, one of the nine unseeded UEFA teams will be selected from Pot 4 and will be transferred to Pot 2. This will leave all four pots with eight teams.

Brazil, as host nation, are automatically assigned as the first team in Group A and will play the opening match in São Paulo, SP, on THU 12 JUN 2014. The seven seeded teams are also in Pot 1 and will be placed, one each, in the other groups.

Then, one of the four seeded CONMEBOL nations – Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Uruguay – will be selected, and the UEFA team that was drawn into Pot 2 at the start of the draw will be placed into that team’s group. The other Pot 2 teams will then be placed into the other groups one at a time; when Chile or Ecuador come out of the pot, they will be moved to a subsequent group if needed to deconflict with the other CONMEBOL teams.

Pots 3 and 4 will be drawn normally, each time placing a team in Groups A-H one by one.

As the teams from Pots 2-4 are drawn, they will randomly be assigned slots 2-4 in their respective groups. The seeded teams will be assigned slot 1.
