Jordan knock out Uzbekistan on penalties, to face CONMEBOL’s fifth
[WED 11 SEP 2013 – 09:52:37 UTC]

Jordan have defeated Uzbekistan in a marathon penalty shootout after an already exhausting AFC playoff in which both legs ended in 1-1 draws. They advance to face the fifth placed side from CONMEBOL.

The first leg in Amman on FRI 06 SEP 2013 saw Uzbek captain Server DJEPAROV equalise five minutes after Musab AL LAHHAM had given the hosts the lead.

At first, Uzbekistan were well served by their return home, reclaiming the aggregate lead five minutes into the second leg on Anzur ISMAILOV’s followup of a Djeparov free kick saved by Jordan keeper Amer SHAFI. But Saeed MURJAN levelled the scoreline again just before halftime.

With the aggregate result tied 2-2, and both sides having scored once away, the match went to overtime. No goals were scored, but the evening was made still more tense when the floodlights failed, forcing an interruption in play.

Odil AHMEDOV missed Uzbekistan’s first penalty of the shootout, but the home side were given a lifeline by Ahmed HAYEL’s failure to convert the winning penalty. The next nine players scored, but in the tenth round, Ismailov missed, handing the match to Jordan. They now advance to the AFC/CONMEBOL playoff to face the fifth placed South American team.
