OFC qualifying format amended
[THU 14 JUL 2011 – 05:44:30 UTC]
FIFA has approved a change to the OFC’s qualifying process for Brazil 2014. Where the men’s football tournament at the 2011 Pacific Games was to serve as the first round, there will now be a first round involving the four lowest ranked teams [as of the FIFA rankings for JUL 2011], with the winner joining the other seven OFC members in the 2012 OFC Nations Cup. The semifinalists of that tournament will then play in the final round, which will be a four team, double round robin group as before. The winner advances to the playoffs against an opponent from another confederation.
¤ Teams to qualify: ½
• Entrants: American Samoa, Cook Is, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Is, Tahiti, Tonga, Vanuatu
