• Costa Rica 00-01 Brazil: Some brilliant goalkeeping by Dinnia DÍAZ kept the match goalless, but RAQUEL finally broke through in the 83rd minute. Australia await the Brazilians in the last sixteen, whilst the Ticas were impressive but unable to escape Group E.
• Korea Rep 02-01 Spain: In a tournament filled with wild matches, this one must surely make the top of the list. It began with a first half goal by Verónica BOQUETE to put Spain into second in Group E, but CHO So Hyun was able to equalise early in the second half. With the Koreans pressing forward in the 78th minute, KIM Soo Yun sent a cross into the area, but Spain keeper Ainhoa TIRAPU was caught wrongfooted, and the ball sailed over her head into the net. Then, in stoppage time, a free kick to Spain just outside the area would have levelled the match again and forced a drawing of lots to decide whether Spain or Costa Rica would take second in the group. Alas, Sonia BERMÚDEZ’s free kick struck the bar, and the Koreans celebrated their first trip to the elimination phase, where France awaits them.
• The day’s results also confirm that Sweden have earned a place in the last sixteen and an encounter with Germany. Defending champions Japan will take on the Netherlands.
