Day 19 recap: A rematch of a recent Men's World Cup final was arranged on TUE 27 JUN 2006.
» Brazil 03-00 Ghana: RONALDO scored his fifteenth Men's World Cup goal, surpassing Gerd MÜLLER's previous record of fourteen. But the Black Stars kept up with Brazil, and the only difference between the teams was Brazil's speed in breaking down the Ghanaian offside trap.
» Spain 01-03 France: David VILLA and Frank RIBERY swapped goals late in the first half, but the two goals in the last ten minutes each went France's way. Patrick VIEIRA and Zinédine ZIDANE were the scorers in Les Bleus' win.

Day 18 recap: Another pair of offense-shy matches took place on MON 26 JUN 2006.
» Italy 01-00 Australia: Harry KEWELL missed the match with gout in his foot, and the Socceroos looked like they could have used his influence. They played the last 39 minutes with a man advantage after Marco MATERAZZI's red card, but they managed few scoring chances. Finally, deep in stoppage time, Lucas NEILL was whistled for bringing down Fabio GROSSO, and Francesco TOTTI put the penalty away.
» Switzerland 00-00 Ukraine [F/OT; PK: 00-03]: For a match featuring Alexander FREI and Andriy SHEVCHENKO, this one was alarmingly dull: there was just one shot on goal in the last 67 minutes. Shevchenko missed the first penalty of the shootout, but Marco STRELLER, Tranquillo BARNETTA, and Ricardo CABANAS all missed to send Ukraine through.
» Quarterfinal matchup: Italy–Ukraine [posted MON 26 JUN 2006 – 21:39:51 UTC]
Day 17 recap: The two second round matches on SUN 25 JUN 2006 saw few goals and much animosity.
» England 01-00 Ecuador: England's problems in the first half were typified by John TERRY's poor defensive header in the 11th minute, which Carlos TENORIO nearly converted into a goal. But David BECKHAM scored on an excellent free kick in the second half to save his side.
» Portugal 01-00 Netherlands: MANICHE Ribeiro scored the only goal in the first half, but this match will be remembered for the new Men's World Cup record of four red cards – to Portugal's COSTINHA and DECO, and the Netherlands' Khalid BOULAHROUZ and Giovanni VAN BRONCKHORST. Referee Valentin IVANOV's control of the match evaporated as the second half saw numerous confrontations between the teams.

Day 16 recap: Two tournament favourites moved on to a quarterfinal meeting on SAT 24 JUN 2006.

» Saudi Arabia 00-01 Spain: Despite playing their second string, the Spaniards completed a perfect first round on Juanito GUTIÉRREZ's headed goal.
» Ukraine 01-00 Tunisia: Ziad JAZIRI was sent off for two yellows in the first half, and in the second, referee Carlos AMARILLA ignored an apparent handball in the area by Andriy VORONIN. Barely a minute later, he did give a penalty – to Ukraine, for what seemed to be innocuous contact by Karim HAGGUI. Andriy SHEVCHENKO converted the penalty, and Ukraine march on from Group H.
» Switzerland 02-00 Korea Rep: Korea Rep coach Dick ADVOCAAT was enraged by Horacio ELIZONDO's decision to award Switzerland's second goal to Alexander FREI, despite assistant Rodolfo OTERO flagging for offside.
» Togo 00-02 France: Togo did their best to play the part of the spoiler, but les Bleus finally got things going in the second half when Patrick VIEIRA and Thierry HENRY scored, earning second place in Group G.
» Second round matchups: Switzerland–Ukraine, Spain–France [posted FRI 23 JUN 2006 – 21:14:45 UTC]
Day 14 recap: Perhaps the two most compelling groups came to their surprising conclusions on THU 22 JUN 2006.
» Czech Rep 00-02 Italy: With places at the top of Group E up for grabs, only the Azzurri were able to capitalise. Marco MATERAZZI and Pippo INZAGHI scored to earn a place in the round of sixteen.
» Ghana 02-01 United States: With the Italians up in Hamburg, these teams knew that their unlikely second round dreams would come true with a win. And with Haminu DRAMAN's opener, along with Stephen APPIAH's penalty, the Black Stars ensured that their first Men's World Cup would last at least one more match.
» Croatia 02-02 Australia: Australia fought back twice to earn a draw and a place in the next round in this match that saw three red cards.
» Japan 01-04 Brazil: RONALDO's two goals give him 14 in his World Cup career, tying him with Gerd MÜLLER for the all time lead. Brazil totalled a perfect nine points in Group F, doing so for the second straight tournament.
» Second round matchups: Italy–Australia, Brazil–Ghana [posted FRI 23 JUN 2006 – 04:14:58 UTC]

» Iran 01-01 Angola: Amado FLÁVIO scored in the second half to give Angola hope of reaching the next round, but Sohrab BAKHTIARIZADEH equalised to salvage a point for Iran.
» Portugal 02-01 Mexico: Omar BRAVO missed a penalty that would have equalised, but despite the loss, Mexico survived a harrowing Group D experience.
» Côte d'Ivoire 03-02 Serbia-Montenegro: Both teams were already eliminated, but a fascinating encounter saw two dismissals [Albert NADJ and Cyrille DOMORAUD] and two penalties that helped the Elephants erase Serbia-Montenegro's two goal lead.
» Netherlands 00-00 Argentina: The tempo of this Group C match slowed gradually as the evening went on in Frankfurt, but both teams appear capable of doing some damage in the elimination phase.
» Second round matchups: Argentina–Mexico, Portugal–Netherlands [posted THU 22 JUN 2006 – 03:42:15 UTC]

» Costa Rica 01-02 Poland: With both teams on the way out, Bartosz BOSACKI scored two goals to relegate los Ticos to last place.
» Ecuador 00-03 Germany: Both had secured passage out of Group A, but Germany took top spot with an impressive win that featured Lukas PODOLSKI's first goal of the tournament.
» Paraguay 02-00 Trinidad-Tobago: Needing a win and some help, the Soca Warriors were instead skewered on Brent SANCHO's header into his own net. Nelson CUEVAS scored late to ensure Paraguay's third place finish in Group B.
» Sweden 02-02 England: Marcus ALLBÄCK scored the 2,000th goal in Men's World Cup history, but England will be more concerned with the fourth minute injury to Michael OWEN's right knee.
» Second round matchups: Germany–Sweden, England–Ecuador [posted WED 21 JUN 2006 – 03:40:13 UTC]

» Spain 03-01 Tunisia: The Carthage Eagles had eyes on the top of Group H when Jaouhar MNARI scored in the eighth minute. But Spain flipped the on switch in the second half, starting with RAÚL's goal off an Ali BOUMNIJEL save. Fernando TORRES followed up with two goals to lead Spain into the next round. [posted TUE 20 JUN 2006 – 05:17:34 UTC]
Day 10 recap: Few teams saw their second round uncertainty resolved on SUN 18 JUN 2006.
» Japan 00-00 Croatia: Darijo SRNA was stymied in the 22nd minute, when Yoshikatsu KAWAGUCHI saved his penalty.
» Brazil 02-00 Australia: ADRIANO scored at the start of the second half, and FRED at the close, to ensure Brazil's passage from Group F.
» France 01-01 Korea Rep: LEE Woon-Jae saved Thierry HENRY's header in the 32nd minute... but was it already in? Replays suggest that it was, and that play gained even more significance when PARK Ji-Sung equalised with just nine minutes left. The Koreans are now two points ahead of France in Group G. [posted SUN 18 JUN 2006 – 21:07:11 UTC]
Day 9 recap: SAT 17 JUN 2006 will surely be remembered as one of the wildest days at this Men's World Cup.
» Portugal 02-00 Iran: DECO and Cristiano RONALDO scored to stamp Portugal's ticket to the elimination phase out of Group D.
» Czech Rep 00-02 Ghana: Asamoah GYAN put the Black Stars up in just the second minute – the earliest goal so far at Germany 2006 – and Sulley MUNTARI scored in the 82nd minute. Both, though, will miss the match against the United States due to yellow card accumulation.
» Italy 01-01 United States: Red was the colour in Kaiserslautern: referee Jorge LARRIONDA wore it; Brian MCBRIDE bled it after being elbowed by Daniele DE ROSSI; De Rossi, Pablo MASTROENI, and Eddie POPE were all shown it. After all that, all four teams in Group E are still alive going into the last matchday, the only such group so far. [posted SAT 17 JUN 2006 – 21:16:48 UTC]
Day 8 recap: Several goals scored on FRI 16 JUN 2006 will make it into the highlight reel at the end of the tournament.
» Argentina 06-00 Serbia-Montenegro: Amongst the Albiceleste's six goals was a beautiful play between Esteban CAMBIASSO and Hernán CRESPO, who backheeled to Cambiasso for the finish.
» Netherlands 02-01 Côte d'Ivoire: Robin VAN PERSIE curled a free kick around the wall and in, Ruud VAN NISTELROOY finished convincingly, and Bakary KONE fired a rocket from just outside the area. The end result was a win for the Dutch, placing themselves and Argentina in the last sixteen from Group C.
» Mexico 00-00 Angola: Angola's fans were doubtless fearing the worst when ANDRÉ Macanga's ill advised handball became his second yellow in the 79th minute, but some wonderful saves from Pereira JOÃO RICARDO kept the Palancas Negras alive in Group D. [posted FRI 16 JUN 2006 – 21:07:55 UTC]
Day 7 recap: The mystery was drawn out of one group, but another was further muddled, on THU 15 JUN 2006.
» Ecuador 03-00 Costa Rica: Ecuador made history in this match, which marked both their highest goal total in a Men's World Cup match, and their first trip to the second round. Their match against Germany will decide first place in Group A.
» England 02-00 Trinidad-Tobago: They left it late, but in the last ten minutes, Peter CROUCH and Steven GERRARD finally got past Shaka HISLOP and secured England's place in the last sixteen.
» Sweden 01-00 Paraguay: Paraguay were eliminated from contention in Group B by Freddie LJUNGBERG's goal from an 89th minute header. [posted FRI 16 JUN 2006 – 05:47:56 UTC]
Day 6 recap: All three matches involved a late goal – some more important than others – on WED 14 JUN 2006.
» Spain 04-00 Ukraine: Ukraine were rudely welcomed to the Men's World Cup when, already down 2-0, referee Massimo BUSACCA sent off Vladislav VASHCHUK for a slight tug on Fernando TORRES's shorts. David VILLA made no mistake on the resulting penalty, and the rout was on.
» Tunisia 02-02 Saudi Arabia: Yaser AL-KAHTANI scored early in the second half to neutralise Ziad JAZIRI's strike, but when Sami AL-JABER's 84th minute goal appeared to have earned three points for the Saudis, Rahdi JAIDI headed home in stoppage time. Nonetheless, both teams will maintain their hopes of advancing out of Group H.
» Germany 01-00 Poland: Oliver NEUVILLE entered the match twenty minutes earlier and took advantage of Radoslaw SOBOLEWSKI's dismissal, scoring in stoppage time to put Germany in control of Group A. [posted THU 15 JUN 2006 – 05:00:10 UTC]
Day 5 recap: There were two surprising comebacks in one match, a repeat of recent history, and a cracking goal on TUE 13 JUN 2006.
» Korea Rep 02-01 Togo: Otto PFISTER had just returned to the Togo side after a short lived resignation, but he may well be unemployed again after a late collapse. The Hawks wasted Mohamed KADER's first half goal when Jean-Paul ABALO was sent off for a second yellow. LEE Chun-Soo scored on the resulting free kick, and AHN Jung-Hwan put away the winner to give Korea Rep first place in Group G.
» France 00-00 Switzerland: They drew twice in UEFA group 4 qualifying, and Tranquillo BARNETTA's post-striking free kick notwithstanding, this match seemed destined to end up the same way.
» Brazil 01-00 Croatia: KAKÁ fired past Stipe PLETIKOSA from distance late in the first half, and Brazil held on to defeat Croatia and keep pace with Australia in Group F. [posted WED 14 JUN 2006 – 04:52:34 UTC]

» United States 00-03 Czech Rep: It was good news and bad news for the Czechs as they dominated the US but saw goalscorer Jan KOLLER stretchered off with an injured thigh.
» Italy 02-00 Ghana: Andrea PIRLO and Vincenzo IAQUINTA each found net to keep the Azzurri on the Czechs' heels in Group E. [posted TUE 13 JUN 2006 – 04:46:03 UTC]
