OVERVIEW
The 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup was held in the United States, having been moved from China PR due to the spreading of SARS. The tournament kicked off on SAT 20 SEP 2003 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. China PR retained their automatic berth as original hosts. The other 15 slots were awarded to the most deserving nations in the qualification procedure. The sixteen nations were in four groups of four in the first round, and the top two teams in each group advanced to the quarterfinals. From that point, elimination matches progressed to the final on SUN 12 OCT 2003 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, CA, Germany taking their first Women's World Cup with a 2-1 overtime win over Sweden.
