OVERVIEW
The 2002 FIFA Men's World Cup was held FRI 31 MAY-SUN 30 JUN 2002 in South Korea and Japan. France, having won in 1998, automatically earned the right to defend its title; the two host nations also got in automatically. The other 29 slots were awarded to the most deserving nations in the qualification procedure. Each team played its three group opponents in the first round, with the two best teams in each group moving into the second round. From then on, single elimination matches were played to narrow the field to two. In Yokohama, Japan, the semifinal winners met at International Stadium Yokohama at 11:00 UTC on SUN 30 JUN 2002, with Brazil taking the Men's World Cup by defeating Germany 2-0.
