Draw places Brazil, Portugal into Group of Death: The draw for the final tournament of the 2010 Men’s World Cup was kind to the defending finalists, but not the losing semifinalists. 2006 champions Italy face Paraguay, New Zealand, and first time qualifiers Slovakia in Group F, whilst France, who fell to the Azzurri in the 2006 final, were drawn against hosts South Africa, Mexico, and Uruguay in Group A. The Group of Death is widely considered to be Group G, which contains Brazil, Korea DPR, Côte d’Ivoire, and Portugal. The tournament’s opening match will be South Africa-Mexico at Johannesburg’s new Soccer City stadium on FRI 11 JUN 2010.

Pots decided for South Africa 2010 draw: FIFA have settled on the pots, seedings, and draw procedure for the 2010 Men’s World Cup final tournament. The top seeds include hosts South Africa and the top seven teams in the FIFA world rankings of OCT 2009, who occupy Pot 1. Pot 2 contains the teams from the AFC, CONCACAF, and the OFC. Pot 3 holds the remaining teams from CAF and CONMEBOL, whilst Pot 4 contains the remaining UEFA teams. Each group will receive one team from each pot, and no group may contain more than two UEFA teams or more than one team from any other confederation. The draw begins at 17:00 UTC on FRI 04 DEC 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

» Kenya 02-03 Nigeria: ...at which point Allan WETENDE equalised for Kenya. Just minutes later, Obafemi MARTINS scored his second goal of the day to put the Super Eagles through.
» Morocco 00-02 Cameroon: Cameroon win Group A and return to the Men’s World Cup as Achille WEBO and Samuel ETO’O were the goalscorers.
» Egypt 02-00 Algeria: The runup to the match was marred by an attack on the Desert Foxes’ team bus when they arrived in Cairo. When the match began, it immediately turned as Amr ZAKI pounced on a Mohamed ABOUTRIKA shot that struck the post. That gave Egypt the lead in the second minute, but no more goals were forthcoming as the tension mounted. With seconds remaining in stoppage time, though, Zaki’s replacement, Emad METEAB headed in the critical second goal. The teams are now dead even atop Group C, each with 13 points, nine goals scored, and four conceded. Each team won their home match by two goals, forcing a single match playoff in Sudan on WED 18 NOV 2009.

» Zambia 00-01 Egypt: Hosny ABD RABOU was the hero for the Pharaohs as he placed a powerful strike in the top corner of the goal. Egypt host Algeria next month needing a three goal win to qualify. If Egypt win by two goals, a playoff will be needed to decide the Group C title.
» Malawi 01-01 Côte d’Ivoire: With the home side playing only for a place in the African Nations Cup, Jacob NGWIRA gave them the lead in the second half. But the Elephants’ Didier DROGBA equalised four minutes later, and the draw meant that Côte d’Ivoire are bound for South Africa as Group E winners.
» Cameroon 03-00 Togo: After a slow start in Group A, the Indomitable Lions have now won three straight.
» Gabon 03-01 Morocco: The Black Panthers kept pace with a hard fought win over Morocco. To qualify, Gabon must hope for Cameroon to slip up in Morocco next month.
» Nigeria 01-00 Mozambique: As the match remained goalless, it appeared that Tunisia’s win over Kenya would make them the champions of Group B. But deep in stoppage time, a save from João KAPANGO rebounded straight to Victor OBINNA, who scored the goal that kept the Super Eagles alive. Nonetheless, Tunisia qualify if they defeat Mozambique next month.

» Gabon 00-02 Cameroon: The match was postponed from SAT 20 JUN 2009 due to the death of Gabon president Omar BONGO, but as post election violence flared up in the country, the delay seemed perhaps insufficient. » Togo 01-00 Cameroon: After missing a month of action due to injury, Emmanuel ADEBAYOR made a triumphant return with an eleventh minute goal that started Togo on the right foot in Group A. Togo played the match in Accra, Ghana to complete the three match home ban imposed due to crowd trouble at a qualifying match for the 2008 African Nations Cup.
» Morocco 01-02 Gabon: The Black Panthers are equal with Togo atop Group A after defeating Morocco. Pierre-Emerick AUBAMEYANG and Roguy MEYE scored late in the first half, and Gabon withstood a late attack from Morocco to earn three points.
» Burkina Faso 04-02 Guinea: Mahamoudou KERE and Alain TRAORE scored for les Etalons in the first half, and though Guinea tried to climb back in, Moumouni DAGANO added two more for Burkina Faso, who become joint leaders of Group E with Côte d’Ivoire.
» Mozambique 00-00 Nigeria: The first of two surprising Sunday draws was in Maputo, where Dario MONTEIRO headed into the goal twice. But both were called back, and the Mambas had to be satisfied with their point, which leaves them two behind Tunisia in Group B.
» Egypt 01-01 Zambia: Amr ZAKI put the home side ahead in the first half, only for Dennis BANDA to score the equaliser in the second. With Rwanda and Algeria playing to a draw the previous day, favoured Egypt are now tied with all of their Group C rivals.

Togo, Cameroon, Morocco to fight in CAF third round: The draw for the CAF third round of qualifiers for South Africa 2010 was not kind to Togo, Cameroon, or Morocco, all of whom ended up together in Group A. Burkina Faso’s strong performance in the second round earns them a meeting with Côte d’Ivoire in Group E, whilst Mali and Sudan are together again in Group D with Ghana and Benin. Only group winners qualify from this round, which begins in MAR 2009.

» Malawi 02-01 Congo DR: The Flames overcame an early deficit to earn a ticket to the third round, taking second place in Group 12.
» Gabon 01-00 Libya: A draw would have sent Libya through, but in the 77th minute, Bruno MBANANGOYE scored the only goal, leaving a three way tie atop Group 5. Gabon and Ghana advance on goal difference.

Qualifying draw raises excitement: The draw for the 2010 Men’s World Cup qualifiers took place in Durban, South Africa on SUN 25 NOV 2007. Here are some of the highlights:
» UEFA group phase: Croatia must face England again, as well as the Ukraine, in Group 6. Other groups that look to be contentious include Group 2 [Greece, Israel, and Switzerland] and Group 5 [Spain, Turkey, and Belgium].
» CAF second round: Even though South Africa are only competing for a place at the 2010 African Nations Cup, they can still dent Nigeria’s chances in Group 4. Egypt, Congo DR, and Malawi square off in Group 12.
» CONCACAF first round: El Salvador could crash Panama’s party in Group 3C, but otherwise the seeded teams expect little trouble.
» AFC third round: Without a doubt, the AFC’s Group of Death is Group 1, in which Australia face China PR and defending Asian champions Iraq. Also intriguing is Group 3, which sees Korea Rep face Korea DPR.

Qualifying draw to reveal all: The footballing world is descending upon Durban, South Africa for the draw for the 2010 Men’s World Cup qualifiers. Five Asian, twelve North American, nine European, and twelve African groups will be drawn in the festivities, which start at 15:00 UTC on SUN 25 NOV 2007. The CONMEBOL group phase and OFC final round are already underway and do not require draws. Below are listed the top seeded teams in each of the other confederations.
